EMDR: proven effective trauma treatment

Traumatic experiences can profoundly affect how you feel and function. For trauma treatment, EMDR is one of the most widely used methods, with overwhelming scientific support.

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. During treatment you recall a distressing memory while simultaneously taxing your working memory — for example by moving your eyes back and forth. As a result, the memory is stored again less vividly and with less emotional charge.

As Marcel van den Hout, professor of clinical psychology, puts it: “When we retrieve a memory while also having to move our eyes back and forth, there is no room left to also retain that emotional charge.”

Fast results

EMDR works fast: in many cases a few sessions are enough. You remember that something happened, but feel emotional distance from the memory.
